Namibia is a place of contrasts and a place of extremes. For instance, Namibia has a land area of more than 850 000 square kilometres, and yet has one of the lowest population densities in the world. Although it has fewer than two million inhabitants, they speak the comparatively large number of eleven 'recognised' languages, as well as others that have too few speakers to be officially recognised. One of the newest countries in the world - independent since as recently as 1990 - Namibia has some of the oldest geological phenomena in the world, and numerous reminders of prehistoric cultures. The seemingly barren Namib Desert borders one of the richest fishing grounds in the world. In Windhoek, or in one of Namibia's other towns, inhabitants and visitors alike can enjoy all of the amenities that are called 'modern'; yet in the north-west of the country, there is a group of people who cling determinedly to their ancient life style and mode of dress.
