SANDSCAPES' GREAT SOUTH TOUR - NAMIBIA Synopsis Itinerary
Sandscapes' Great South self-drive tour takes you from Swakopmund to the Fish River Canyon near the southern border of Namibia and includes premier destinations such as the canyon, the central and southern Namib Desert, Sossussvlei, and Luderitz. The itinerary is flexible and can be adapted to your personal circumstances and interests. At Sandscapes, we assist you to experience and enjoy these popular destinations in the combinations, modes, and schedules that suit you best. SYNOPSIS OF THE ITINERARY This is a synopsis. Please click here for a FULL DESCRIPTION OF THE ITINERARY. DAYS 1 & 2: Windhoek, staying at the Olive Grove Guest House or Hotel Heinitzburg. Activities in Windhoek include a general tour of the city; a historical walking tour; a township tour; browsing the book shops; and relaxing with a coffee or a beer at a cafe on or just off Independence Avenue, absorbing the ambience of Namibia. Because of its situation and the fact that it is the site of the country’s major airport, many visitors begin and end their Namibian holiday in Windhoek. DAYS 3, 4, & 5: Swakopmund, staying at the Hansa Hotel. Set between dry desert and fertile ocean, with its German-era buildings and unusual misty climate, Swakopmund is well worth a visit. Swakopmund is a major destination for a holiday in Namibia! Also enjoy a desert tour that includes the ancient welwitschia plants; visit the nearby harbour and fishing port of Walvis Bay, visiting the lagoon with its thousands of water birds; make a day trip in a 4X4 vehicle to Sandwich Harbour, a desert-fringed marine lagoon; take a sea cruise to view dolphins, seals, and other marine life; engage in deep-sea or shore-based fishing; and enjoy quad-biking, hang-gliding, and sand-boarding on the desert dunes. DAY 8: Aus, staying at Klein Aus Vista Lodge with a stop at Duwisib Castle. Relax after the drive, enjoy the fine views, and use it as a staging post for the rest of your journey! DAYS 11 & 12: Fish River Canyon - This great canyon is reputedly the second largest in the world - superseded only by the Grand Canyon, of course! Cañon Lodge is the centre piece of the 520-square kilometre, privately owned Gondwana Canyon Park on the edge of the canyon. Tall weather-beaten granite boulders form an integral part of the overall design of this strikingly different lodge. Activities include viewing the canyon in all of its different moods and prospects, a short guided drive to a viewpoint, followed by a hike back to the lodge for breakfast, flights over the canyon, and experiencing the splendour of the canyon landscape on horseback.
DAY 13: Kalahari stop-over at Bagatelle Kalahari Game Lodge, which lies on the edge of the southern Kalahari in an area that is characterised by huge red sands dunes running parallel to each other. The lodge's design and décor, materials and furnishings, gardens and natural settings, all combine for the delight of the guests. Sundowners on a red Kalahari sand dune offer the perfect way to watch the sun sink away into the distant dunes. Other activities include visiting the sheep and cattle farming operations; viewing cheetah at play from a platform overlooking a natural waterhole; and walking and hiking
DAY 14: Kiripotib Guest Farm - This is an active cattle and sheep ranch that is also home to the workshops that produce hand-woven karakul wool carpets and African Kirikara Art, as well as jewellery. Kiripotib offers stylish and comfortable rooms and invites guests to enjoy Namibian cuisine, featuring fresh farm products, in the thatched lapa or around the fire in the boma under the canopy of stars. Learn about the ranching operations, observe the weaving process, and walk on the property. DAY 15: Airport departure or Windhoek - Today you can either drive directly to Windhoek International Airport to catch your departure flight, or you can choose to spend a last day and night in Windhoek. -
EXTENSION ONE: From Cañon Lodge, take a short drive southwards to the Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort, which is located within the canyon where it begins to decline in size toward the Orange River. Spend a day and night relaxing in the spa complex and walking in the rugged terrain in the vicinity of the resort. The accommodation at Ai-Ais does not meet Sandscapes’ criteria but is all that is available on the spot. However, it is clean and comfortable. |
